  • Modafferi vs. Lee targeted for September 12th UFC event
by Mookie Alexander on July 4, 2020 at 7:30 pm

Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images Both flyweights are coming off decision losses to Lauren Murphy. “The Happy Warrior” and “KGB” are on a collision course to meet this September. MMAjunkie reports that verbal agreements are in place for women’s flyweights Roxanne Modafferi and Andrea Lee to fight at a UFC event tentatively slotted for September 12th. Modafferi (24-17) started 2020 with a dominant upset win over highly touted prospect Maycee Barber at UFC 246. She was unable to replicate her success against Lauren Murphy last month, dropping a unanimous decision in a fight that was largely contested on the feet. The 37-year-old is a women’s MMA pioneer who’s turned what was a six-fight losing streak into a 9-6 record over her last 15 fights, including a spirited performance in a title fight loss to Nicco Montano. Lee (11-4) is arguably in must-win territory if she wants to remain within event decent distance of a title shot. […]

  • Geoff Neal: ‘I think Michael Chiesa is f**king scared sh*tless to fight me’
by Damon Martin on July 4, 2020 at 7:00 pm

Geoff Neal | Esther Lin, MMA Fighting It’s been over six months since Geoff Neal last set foot in the octagon and he’s getting a little tired of waiting for an opponent to accept his challenge. After demolishing his first five opponents in the UFC with four of those ending by knockout or TKO, the 29-year-old former Contender Series veteran was anxiously awaiting the opportunity to climb into the top-10 rankings. Unfortunately, Neal says that despite the UFC’s best efforts, the list of fighters willing to face him has been rather short; actually, it’s been non-existent. “The UFC’s been doing a great job trying to find me a fight,” Neal said when speaking to MMA Fighting. “They can only do so much. They can’t make somebody fight. You hear Dana White say all the time ‘I can’t make these guys fight.’ That’s really what it comes down to. They’ve been trying. “I don’t know the exact details of […]

  • Former UFC fighter Clay Collard gets another Top Rank Boxing spot
by Mookie Alexander on July 4, 2020 at 6:00 pm

Collard will be taking on another fellow MMA fighter. MMA veteran Clay Collard has made quite the name for himself in the boxing world, and Top Rank has taken notice. Having pulled off yet another upset victory over an unbeaten prospect, the former UFC fighter is set to return to ESPN airwaves for a July 14th bout against Lowrant-T Nelson, per ESPN’s Steve Kim. That show is expected to be headlined by WBO junior lightweight champion Jamel Herring against Jonathan Oquendo. Collard (7-2-3, 2 KOs) had a thrilling knockout win over Raymond Guajardo in February, then was put in against the undefeated David Kaminsky last month. He relished his heavy underdog status and implemented his high workrate and rugged style to great success, getting a well-earned decision. For someone with a reputation for fighting unbeaten fighters, Collard looks to be the A-side here against Nelson, himself an MMA fighter and former GLORY kickboxer. His official pro boxing record is 5-3 (4 KOs), with no […]

Photo by Valery Sharifulin\TASS via Getty Images Much has happened in the past week: Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov passed away due to complications from COVID-19, Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker put on a Fight of the Year contender, and Max Holloway revealed he hasn’t been sparring ahead of his title fight rematch next weekend. Let’s discuss. Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov Obviously not of great importance at the moment, but it’s times like this I wish there was a real MMA Hall of Fame. Considering his contributions to the sport, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov would be a first-ballot HOF. It would be nice to have a proper place to honor legends like him.— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) July 3, 2020 We’re starting off with something that isn’t even a question for two reasons: I wanted to speak briefly on the passing of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, and Ariel brings up a very legitimate discussion. • Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington say they’ll step in with Gilbert Burns out of UFC 251
by MMAWeekly.com Staff on July 4, 2020 at 4:48 pm

Gilbert Burns was pulled from the UFC 251 main event opposite welterweight champion Kamaru Usman after testing positive for COVID-19. Fellow contenders Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington are each prepared to step in and fight. Burns had been expected to challenge Usman following a blistering six-fight victory run that includes two bouts already this year, despite the pandemic. But now that pandemic has caught up to Burns and stalled his momentum. He tested positive prior to boarding a plane in Las Vegas headed to UFC Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. It is now unclear what happens with Usman, but Masvidal and Covington both appear prepared to step in. Masvidal has been in the midst of a contract dispute with the UFC, so it remains to be seen if the promotion is willing to move on its position now that its monstrous UFC 251 fight card has been disrupted. There are two other championship bouts slated for UFC 251, but the tripleheader was expected to be the quite the cherry on top of a […]

  • What MMA fighters need to know about their taxes

Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports A conversation with a CPA who specializes in fighter taxes Mike Perry’s celebration was short lived. Perry, gasping for breath after his win over Mickey Gall, sporting an open cut above his left eyebrow, told UFC commentator Jon Anik of his post-fight woes. “I gotta pay some bills, pay some debts. I gotta go talk to the tax folk and see if we can run that number down because I believe I paid out over a $100,000 last year between a couple of different countries,” said Perry. “And then they try and hit me again at the end of the year.” Perry is not the only fighter whose had problems with the taxman. “I’ve never paid taxes in my life, I’m probably gonna go to jail,” Nick Diaz said after his loss to Georges St-Pierre at UFC 158. “That’s not because I don’t have, that’s not because – what, nobody wants to hear about that, nobody wants to hear about that kind of talk, or […]

Photo by Paul Kane/Zuffa LLC With Kamaru Usman vs. Gilbert Burns off UFC 251 following Burns’ positive test for COVID-19, the fight between featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway has been promoted into Fight Island’s first main event slot. That’s all good as far as Volkanovski is concerned. “This was the real main event,” Volkanovski said in a new ESPN interview. “A lot of people thought this was the main event, so it’s in its rightful place.” The Coronavirus continues to insert itself into every angle of this upcoming fight card in Abu Dhabi after a relatively quiet period where the UFC held events for a month at their UFC APEX facility in Las Vegas. Several fights on July undercards have been scrapped as fighters continue to test positive for the virus, with Usman vs. Burns the highest profile scratch. But even Volkanovski vs. Holloway came perilously close to not happening. It turns out Alexander’s ability […]

As the Coronavirus continues to spread in terrifying fashion across various regions of America, some people still aren’t taking it seriously. That includes former UFC heavyweight fighter Brendan Schaub, who has used his podcast and social media platform to downplay the dangers of the virus. There will be hotel dining areas, golf course, an Octagon on the beach (for training only), and other activities set for the UFC’s Yas Island “bubble.” One very notable potential change for this month’s UFC shows is the reintroduction of fans. Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC UFC 251 has lost its main event. On a day filled with cancellations of fights slated for the UFC’s “Fight Island” series in Abu Dhabi, the biggest one yet has just occurred. MMA Junkie’s John Morgan broke the news on late Friday night that welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns, along with his coach Greg Jones, tested positive for the coronavirus. This obviously means that his title bout against champion Kamaru Usman is no longer headlining UFC 251 on July 11th. While the UFC had only three total cancellations due to positive COVID-19 results in May and June, Friday has produced four by itself. Gilbert’s positive result comes not long after teammate and ONE Championship star Aung La N Sang also had a positive test for COVID-19. Perhaps that was an ominous sign that UFC 251’s main event was in jeopardy. Burns was in Las Vegas and set to travel to Abu Dhabi from one of the UFC’s selected “hub […]

by Dan Hiergesell on July 4, 2020 at 2:00 am

Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic Despite his questionable antics outside of the cage it’s hard to discredit Conor McGregor’s work inside of it. In just a matter of three years McGregor became the biggest star in mixed martial arts (MMA) history. After making his UFC debut in 2013 it took “Notorious” just 10 fights to clear out the featherweight division, forge a legendary feud with Nate Diaz at 170 pounds, and claim the lightweight title en route to becoming UFC’s first ever champ-champ, all while cementing himself as the highest paid athlete in the sport. McGregor’s efforts, which were fueled by unscripted madness in order to create unworldly buzz around his fights, eventually broke the UFC mold and shattered the proverbial ceiling that has long been placed on MMA fighters. His path to greatness may not have been a favorable or agreeable venture, but it’s hard to ignore the fact that McGregor is one of the most important fighters […]

The official fight poster for UFC’s upcoming event on July 25 live on ESPN+ from ‘Fight Island’ in Abu Dhabi has dropped, and it looks pretty damn good. Leading the way for UFC’s end-of-July event is a middleweight headliner pitting former 185-pound champion Robert Whittaker against former welterweight contender Darren Till. This will be Whittaker’s first fight since losing his belt to Israel Adesanya last October, while Till makes his second appearance at middleweight since returning to the division late last year. In advance to the middleweight headliner, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will run it back with fellow Brazilian legend Antonio Rogerio Nogueira for a third time in what will be “Lil Nog’s” final MMA fight. Also gracing the main card will be a heavyweight clash between former UFC champion Fabricio Werdum and former light heavyweight title challenger Alexander Gustafsson, who will be making his division debut. Despite their bitter rivalry, former dual-division champion Conor McGregor on Friday offered his condolences on the loss of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father. Khabib and McGregor have a sordid past that includes the Irishman and group of his associates attacking a UFC transport van following the UFC 223 media day on April 5, 2018. McGregor threw a hand truck at the window of a van that held Khabib and several other UFC fighters and staff members inside, as they awaited transport back to their hotel. The UFC opted to close the UFC 229 pre-fight press conference to the public at Radio City Music Hall in New York ahead of Khabib and McGregor’s fight in October 2018. • Dana White releases UFC Fight Island infrastructure first-look video
by MMAWeekly.com Staff on June 30, 2020 at 5:57 pm

The Ultimate Fighting Championship recently held its fifth event at the Apex, its own arena and broadcast facility based on the UFC’s Las Vegas campus. The venerable fight promotion is now set to travel to Abu Dhabi for a slate of four events over the course of 15 days on Yas Island. Dubbed UFC Fight Island, company president Dana White arranged for the venue as a place to more easily get his athletes outside of the United States back to work. Some fighters have been able to make the trek to Las Vegas, but there are too many restrictions and governmental delays in obtaining visas to reasonably get many of the rosters international-based fighters into the country. White was extremely quiet about the location and its infrastructure until just recently, when he revealed the location of Fight Island. Now, the UFC has released promotional videos to hype up the fight cards. White joined in on Tuesday by sharing a video from Abu Dhabi, which shows a map of Fight Island, some of the […]

He is required two quarantine in a hotel for two weeks per New Zealand’s COVID-19 related travel restrictions. • Dustin Poirier tops UFC on ESPN 12 fighter payroll
by MMAWeekly.com Staff on June 29, 2020 at 6:03 pm

Former interim UFC lightweight champion Dustin Poirier got back on the winning track at UFC on ESPN 12. Along with the headlining victory, Poirier also sat atop the fighter payroll for the event. Poirier and Hooker earned Fight of the Night honors, giving each man an additional $50,000 bonus for his efforts, but Poirier came out on top with a unanimous decision victory. The win isn’t likely to put him next in line for another shot at undisputed champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, but it earned Poirier a $300,000 paycheck (not including the Fight of the Night bonus).  Nurmagomedov will next face interim titleholder Justin Gaethje at an unannounced event in September. Mike Perry, whose girlfriend served as his lone corner at UFC on ESPN 12, was second on the list of top fighter salaries. He earned $180,000 for his co-main event victory over Mickey Gall. The figures in the reported UFC on ESPN 12 fighter salaries represent the disclosed payroll submitted by the UFC to the […]
